I was a teenager in US during Tyson’s prime in the mid to late 80s. Christmas Merry Chrithmith Mike Tyson shirt previous to Tyson. Whenever I’d stay up and watch boxing with my Dad, fights always seemed to last ages, so I remember being amazed that Tyson always knocked his guy out in a couple of rounds. It was the feeling of ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ as soon as the first bell rang. Tyson was a legend with me and my schoolmates back in the day. Plus, he looked cool in all black gear. Pretty much had the same experience growing up in the American Midwest during that same time. We seem to be about the same age. When Tyson came along, there was just something different about him.
The explosiveness was just amazing. t’s said that each great heavyweight champion is a reflection of their decade. Jack Dempsey was about the hobo-life & the roaring 20s. Joe Louis was about the proper 40s after the war. Rocky Marciano was about the rising 50s. Ali was about the rebellious 60s & anti-establishment 70s. Following that same theme, Tyson was about the excesses of the 80s. Drugs, women, & the life of a rock star. The Tyson traits that really made him a world. All of those factors in combination, in my opinion, are what led to his meteoric rise. When I’m talking sports with people, I’ll ask them sometimes.
