I really don’t think it’s a stretch to state that, among the cohort of top schools. Stanford places a larger emphasis on medical leadership, tech, and entrepreneurship. The fact that so many Stanford students do research years and dual degrees show. That Stanford is an institution which values leadership and excellence in research, administration, etc. I’m not sure why you took this as an attack on your school as I think it’s one of Stanford’s big selling points. Medical leadership doesn’t just mean “selling out” and going into a tech startup, it also means going into academic medicine or doing an MBA, both of which Stanford is particularly known for. The high proportion of research years clearly does not reflect poorly on Stanford in that light. I’d also love to hear why you disagree with my comments about schools at the end of the list– I reached out to other applicants and admitted students to come up with these comments

I think you misinterpreted what I was saying. Flag of the United States EMT Shirt. I’m putting a first-author Nature/Cell publication. On the same level as being an actual refugee, serving in the military as an officer and career changing, etc. I recognize how hard it is to get a first-author paper in one of those journals. In fact, I have an incoming classmate with a first-author Cell paper. They just happen to have completed a Ph.D. before career changing to med school. And were already a truly exceptional Ph.D. student.
